Zach & Chad's Hosting Pad
Zach Hansen is one of the owners of the incredible home you see in the photos below, and since he’s also one of Homeworks’ very own agents, this one feels near and dear. Just a couple of weeks ago, he and his husband Chad put their stunning Capitol Hill property on the market, and we can say with confidence that you don’t often see homes like this one in Salt Lake City.
The property in question is Cape-Cod in style, brick in material, and perfectly placed in terms of location. Just one block down from our city’s Capitol building, the immaculate civic grounds serve as the literal backyard for this home (which also has its own “official” backyard, complete with tiered landscaping, plenty of grass, a BBQ/lounge area, and a canopy of trees). That means residents of the area are also just a stone’s throw from City Creek Canyon and downtown SLC—so you’re well placed whether the order of the day is hiking, shopping, or anything in between. A few years ago, the pair decided to remodel in the interest of tailoring the space to a more social lifestyle, and the result is a beautiful and modern home in a historic and peaceful neighborhood—the perfect place in which to hunker down or host.
With the home for sale, we decided to have a chat with the pair to get the word on changes made, parties thrown, and what they’ll miss the most about living here…
“Driving up State Street and seeing the Capitol illuminated at night never gets old...”
Give us a little summary of your amazing remodel. What made you want to take on such a serious project?
The house just didn’t work for our lifestyle. We love to host family and friends, and the old layout divided the main floor into so many small rooms, it was impossible to accommodate the large group that always seems to congregate at our home. So we did it out of necessity and we designed it based on how we live.
What's your favorite room in the house? Tell us why.
We love the living room/bar combo. We love how the sunlight cascades through the windows during the day and how our little pups sunbathe and stretch in the warm sun. We also love the living room because it can comfortably seat 12, and we can make drinks in the bar without missing a minute of the conversation.
Best party you ever hosted here...what was the occasion and what were the vibes?
It's impossible to pick a favorite party! New Year’s Eve 2021 during COVID was pretty epic. Everyone was so hungry for human interaction...so much so that they braved getting on planes from all corners of the U.S. for a week in SLC. We used every inch of the house to make space for all who wanted or needed a place to go. Admittedly, it was probably not the smartest move during a global pandemic, but it also felt so necessary for those who attended. What made it amazing was that we all dressed up, which most of us hadn't done in over a year. It was a super eclectic group of people that made the night one I will never forget.
What do you think will be the hardest part about leaving this neighborhood?
Leaving this neighborhood will be difficult for so many reasons, but the biggest heartache is not having the Capitol in my backyard. We love walking the dogs around the grounds, taking part in civil movements, or being spectators on the Capitol's stairs, and there is no better neighborhood with proximity to downtown.
And how about for the next lucky residents of Hillside Ave...what's one thing that you think they'll love the most about this place/neighborhood?
The next owner will love it for all the same reasons! Being downtown is a huge lure for loved ones who want come visit, and it's the perfect launch pad for an evening in the city. And driving up State and seeing the Capitol illuminated at night never gets old.
